After offering them due reverence, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) addressed the venerable sages: “Revered ones, where have you attained your spiritual perfection? What path brings you here? What purpose brings you to this place? How may I serve you, and for what reason have you come upon this earth?” In this courteous inquiry, Kṛṣṇa models dharmic conduct: honoring the holy first, then asking with humility about their aim, their way, and the service one may render to them.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic etiquette: first honor the worthy (especially sages and guests), then inquire with humility about their path and purpose, and offer service. Respectful reception and readiness to serve are presented as ethical virtues.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Kṛṣṇa, after performing proper worship of visiting sages, questions them courteously—asking where they attained perfection, what route brought them, what their purpose is, and how he may serve them.
