Omens and Reception During Keśava’s Departure
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: kaccil lokeṣu kuśalaṃ kaccid dharmaḥ sv-anuṣṭhitaḥ | brāhmaṇānāṃ trayo varṇāḥ kaccit tiṣṭhanti śāsane | pitṛ-deva-atithi-bhyaś ca kaccit pūjā sv-aniṣṭhitā ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “Is all well among the peoples? Is dharma being properly observed? Do the three social orders—beginning with the kṣatriyas—remain under the guidance and discipline of the brāhmaṇas? And are the rites of honor and worship duly performed for the ancestors, the gods, and for guests?”
The verse frames good governance and social health as inseparable from dharma: public welfare, faithful observance of moral-ritual duties, respect for learned guidance, and the honoring of ancestors, deities, and guests are presented as key indicators of a righteous polity.
In the Udyoga Parva’s diplomatic and preparatory context before war, the speaker reports a formal inquiry into the state of the realm—asking whether society is secure, dharma is being practiced, social groups remain disciplined under proper counsel, and customary worship and hospitality are being maintained.
