Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 47 — Arjuna’s Deterrent Declaration

Sañjaya’s Report

sañjaya uvāca | yadā jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ saṃśitātmā krodhaṃ yat taṃ varṣa-pūgān sughoram avasraṣṭā kuruṣu vṛtta-cetās tadā yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭro ’nvatapsyāt |

Sañjaya said: When the eldest Pāṇḍava—Yudhiṣṭhira, whose mind is purified and disciplined—at last, stirred to action, releases upon the Kauravas that most dreadful wrath held back for many years, then the war that follows will be so terrible that Duryodhana, seeing its consequences, will be forced into bitter regret.

Educational Q&A

Even a righteous and self-controlled person can become fearsome when long-restrained anger is finally released; therefore, wrongdoing that provokes such a response leads to catastrophic consequences and eventual remorse for the aggressor.

Sañjaya foretells that if Yudhiṣṭhira—normally disciplined and patient—unleashes his long-suppressed wrath against the Kauravas, the resulting war will be dreadful, and Duryodhana will later suffer regret upon witnessing its devastation.
