Sañjaya said: “Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, the great chariot-warrior Sātyaki, the five Kekaya brothers, and the rākṣasa Ghaṭotkaca—grinding their teeth together and licking the corners of their mouths—rose up from their seats in wrath. Their eyes reddened with anger, they seized their well-adorned arms—decked with armlets, pearl-strings, and bracelets and anointed with red sandal paste—signaling a fierce readiness to answer insult with force as the crisis of dharma moved toward war.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how quickly anger can surge in moments of political and moral crisis; it implicitly contrasts raw martial impulse with the need for dharmic restraint and right judgment before violence becomes inevitable.

Sañjaya describes key Pāṇḍava-aligned warriors reacting with visible fury—rising from their seats and showing aggressive bodily signs—indicating that negotiations and tensions are pushing the assembly toward open war.
