न चैतन्नैष्ठिकं कर्म त्रयाणां भूरिदक्षिण । चतुर्णा राजशार्दूल प्राहुराश्रमवासिनाम्,पर्याप्त दक्षिणा देनेवाले राजसिंह! यह भैक्ष्यचर्या क्षत्रिय आदि तीन वर्णोके लिये नित्य या अनिवार्य कर्म नहीं है। चारों आश्रमवासियोंका कर्म उनके लिये ऐच्छिक ही बताया गया है
Translation
Bhishma said: “O lion among kings, you who bestow abundant dakṣiṇā, this practice of living by alms is not a perpetual or compulsory duty for the three varṇas, kṣatriyas included. And for those who dwell in any of the four āśramas, their prescribed works are likewise said to be optional, according to fitness and resolve.”
