Kṣātra-dharma as the Public Foundation of Dharma (क्षात्रधर्म-प्रशंसा)
बाह्वायत्तं क्षत्रियैमनिवानां लोकश्रेष्ठ धर्ममासेवमानै: । सर्वे धर्मा: सोपधर्मस्त्रियाणां राज्ञो धर्मादिति वेदाच्छूणोमि,राजन! राजधर्म बाहुबलके अधीन होता है। वह क्षत्रियके लिये जगतका श्रेष्ठतम धर्म है, उसका सेवन करनेवाले क्षत्रिय मानवमात्रकी रक्षा करते हैं। अतः तीनों वर्णोंके उपधर्मोंसहित जो अन्यान्य समस्त धर्म हैं। वे राजधर्मसे ही सुरक्षित रह सकते हैं, यह मैंने वेद-शास्त्रसे सुना है
bāhvāyattaṃ kṣatriyair manuṣyāṇāṃ lokaśreṣṭhaṃ dharmam āsevamānaiḥ | sarve dharmāḥ sopadharmas triyāṇāṃ rājño dharmād iti vedāc chrūṇomi, rājan ||
Bhishma said: “O King, I have heard from the Veda and the śāstras that the king’s dharma rests upon the strength of his arms. For kṣatriyas, this is the highest dharma in the world: by practicing it, they protect all human beings. Therefore, all other forms of dharma—together with the subsidiary duties of the three social orders—remain secure only under the protection of royal duty.”
