Sūrya–Nāga Dialogue on the Perfected Gleaner-Ascetic
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: jajñe bahujñaṃ paramātyudāraṃ yaṃ dvīpa-madhye sutam ātma-yogāt | Parāśarāt Satyavatī maharṣiṃ tasmai namo’jñāna-tamo-nudāya ||
Vaiśampāyana said: I bow to that great sage Vyāsa—supremely generous and possessed of vast knowledge—whom Satyavatī, by uniting her body through yogic self-control, bore as a son on an island in the river, from the sage Parāśara. To him, the dispeller of the darkness of ignorance, my reverence.
The verse models reverence for the guru and for knowledge itself: Vyāsa is praised as the one who dispels the darkness of ignorance, implying that learning and right understanding are ethical forces that guide dharma.
Vaiśampāyana offers an opening salutation to Vyāsa, recalling his extraordinary birth from Satyavatī and the sage Parāśara on a river-island, and honoring him as a supremely learned, noble sage.
