उशनसः (शुक्रस्य) चरितम् — The Account of Uśanā (Śukra): Yoga, Grievance, and Pacification

विमुक्ता: सप्तदशभिहेंतुभूतैश्व॒ पठचभि: । इन्द्रियार्थर्गुणैश्वैव अष्टाभिश्व पितामह,पितामह! पंच ज्ञानेन्द्रिय, पंच कर्मेन्द्रिय, पंच प्राण, मन और बुद्धि--ये सत्रह तत्त्व; काम, क्रोध, लोभ, भय और स्वप्न--ये संसारके पाँच हेतु; शब्द, स्पर्श, रूप, रस और गन्ध >-ये पाँच विषय; सत्त्व, रज और तम-ये तीन गुण तथा पाँच भूतोंसहित अविद्या, अहंकार और कर्म--ये आठ तत्त्वोंके समुदाय सब मिलाकर अड़तीस तत्त्व होते हैं। इन सबसे मुक्त हुए तीक्ष्ण व्रतधारी मुनि पुनर्जन्मको नहीं प्राप्त होते हैं। परंतप पितामह! हमलोग भी कब अपना राज्य छोड़कर इसी स्थितिको प्राप्त होंगे

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | vimuktāḥ saptadaśabhir hetubhūtaiś ca pañcabhiḥ | indriyārthaguṇaiś caiva aṣṭābhiś ca pitāmaha pitāmaha | pañca jñānendriyāṇi pañca karmendriyāṇi pañca prāṇāḥ manaś ca buddhis ca—ime saptadaśa tattvāni | kāmaḥ krodho lobho bhayaṃ svapnaś ca—ime saṃsārasya pañca hetavaḥ | śabdaḥ sparśo rūpaṃ raso gandhaś ca—ime pañca viṣayāḥ | sattvaṃ rajas tamaś ca—ime trayo guṇāḥ | pañcabhūtaiḥ saha avidyā ahaṃkāraḥ karma ca—ime aṣṭa tattvasaṃghātāḥ | etaiḥ sarvair vimuktās tīkṣṇavratadharā munayaḥ punarjanma na prāpnuvanti | parantapa pitāmaha vayaṃ api kadā rājyaṃ tyaktvā etām eva sthitiṃ prāpsyāmaḥ ||

Yudhiṣṭhira said: “O Grandsire, O Grandsire! Those ascetics who have been freed from the seventeen constituent principles, from the five causes that bind one to saṃsāra, from the sense-objects and the three guṇas, and from the eightfold aggregate (including the elements and the inner afflictions), do not attain rebirth. The seventeen are: the five organs of knowledge, the five organs of action, the five vital airs, the mind, and the intellect. The five causes of saṃsāra are: desire, anger, greed, fear, and dream. The five objects are: sound, touch, form, taste, and smell. The three guṇas are: sattva, rajas, and tamas. And together with the five great elements, ignorance, egoism, and karma make up the eightfold aggregate. When all these are transcended, the sharp-vowed sages do not return to birth again. O chastiser of foes, when shall we too abandon kingship and reach that very state?”
