Yudhiṣṭhira said: “The sages of firm and disciplined vows do not return to rebirth. O scorcher of foes, Grandfather—when shall we, abandoning kingship, attain that state?”

Liberation is described as freedom from the entire complex of constituents that structure embodied experience—faculties, objects, qualities, elements, and the binding forces of ignorance, ego-sense, and action. One who is detached from these and established in disciplined vows does not return to rebirth.
During Bhīṣma’s instruction in the Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira reflects on the sages who attain freedom from rebirth and asks Bhīṣma when he and his brothers will be able to renounce royal power and reach the same liberated state.
