etā vidyāḥ kṣatriyāṇāṃ rājan saṃsiddhikārikāḥ | api gāthām imāṃ cāpi bṛhaspatir agāyat ||
Vyāsa said: “O king, these disciplines and sacred duties are what bring the kṣatriyas their sure accomplishment and success. On this very subject, Bṛhaspati too once sang this traditional verse.”
व्यास उवाच
That the kṣatriya’s true ‘success’ (saṃsiddhi) comes from adherence to the proper disciplines and duties—ethical, ritual, and political—and that this principle is supported by authoritative tradition, here attributed to Bṛhaspati.
Vyāsa addresses a king and, after listing or indicating the relevant kṣatriya disciplines, introduces an authoritative supporting quotation: a gāthā said to have been sung by Bṛhaspati on the same topic.
