Educational Q&A

By listing the Ādityas and their distinct functions, the passage reinforces that dharma and social order are sustained through defined roles—distribution, friendship, restraint, inspiration, and support—mirroring how a well-governed society depends on coordinated duties and moral regulation.

In the Shanti Parva’s instructional setting, Bhishma is teaching and here enumerates prominent Ādityas (solar deities). The verse functions as part of a broader explanation of divine categories and their governance of the world, grounding ethical and political instruction in sacred cosmology.
