Adhyāya 193: Adjudication of the Comparable Fruits of Japa and Yoga

bharadvāja uvāca | na lobhaḥ paradāreṣu svadāra-nirato janaḥ | nānyonyaṃ badhyate tatra dravyeṣu ca na vismayaḥ | paro hy adharmo naivāsti saṃdeho nāpi jāyate |

Bharadvāja said: In that realm there is no lust for another’s wife; people remain devoted to their own spouses. For the sake of wealth they do not kill one another, nor do they bind anyone in captivity. They are not shaken by extraordinary astonishment, for wrongdoing has no place there at all. Doubt, too, does not arise in anyone’s mind—such is the settled order of dharma there.

Educational Q&A

The verse describes an ideal dharmic society: fidelity in relationships, absence of greed-driven violence, no oppression through captivity, and a mental culture free from suspicion and moral transgression.

Bharadvāja is portraying the ethical condition of a particular realm or community, emphasizing how social harmony arises when desire, greed, and adharma are absent and people remain steady in rightful conduct.
