यद्यूष्मभाव आग्नेयो वह्लिना पच्यते यदि । अग्निर्जरयते चैतत्‌ तस्माज्जीवो निरर्थक:,यदि शरीरमें गर्मी अग्निका अंश है, यदि अग्निसे ही खाये हुए अन्नका परिपाक होता है, यदि अग्नि ही सबको जीर्ण करती है, तब तो जीवकी सत्ता मानना व्यर्थ ही है

yady ūṣmabhāva āgneyo vahninā pacyate yadi | agnir jarayate caitat tasmāj jīvo nirarthakaḥ ||

Bharadvāja argues: If the bodily heat is merely a portion of fire; if it is fire alone that cooks and digests the food one eats; and if fire itself is what ‘ages’ and wears everything down—then, he concludes, positing an independent living self (jīva) becomes pointless.
