Śānti-parva 168: Śoka-nivṛtti-buddhi (The Cognition that Reduces Grief) and Piṅgalā’s Nairāśya

Vaiśampāyana uvāca: tatas tad agryaṃ vacanaṃ manonugaṃ samastam ājñāya tato hi hetumat | tadā praṇeduś ca va jahṛṣire ca te kurupravīrāya ca cakrir añjalim ||

Vaiśampāyana said: Then, having fully understood that excellent statement—reasonable and agreeable to the mind—they all became delighted. They raised a joyful acclaim, and with hands joined in reverence they paid homage to Yudhiṣṭhira, the foremost hero of the Kurus. (The teaching affirmed is that human beings cannot secure results merely by action; what is destined comes to pass. Even one lacking the three aims of life may obtain necessities; therefore the subtle means to liberation—true knowledge—is the world’s real welfare.)
