ईर्ष्या कामात्‌ प्रभवति संहर्षाच्चैव जायते । इतरेषां तु सत्त्वानां प्रज्ञया सा प्रणश्यति,मनमें कामना होनेसे तथा दूसरे प्राणियोंकी हँसी-खुशी देखनेसे ईर्ष्याकी उत्पत्ति होती है तथा विवेकशील बुद्धिके द्वारा उसका नाश होता है

īrṣyā kāmāt prabhavati saṁharṣāc caiva jāyate | itareṣāṁ tu sattvānāṁ prajñayā sā praṇaśyati ||

Bhishma said: Envy arises from desire, and it is also born when one sees the delight and prosperity of others. Yet for living beings it is destroyed by prajñā—discriminating wisdom—by which one recognizes the futility of comparison and restrains craving.
