अज्ञान–लोभयोः परस्परहेतुत्वम्
Mutual Causality of Ignorance and Greed
एतदेव हि कार्पण्यं समग्रमसमीक्षितम् | यच्चेत् समी क्षयैव स्याद् भवेत् तस्मिंस्ततो गुण:,यदि सारी बातोंपर पूर्वापर विचार न करके कोई कार्य आरम्भ किया जाय तो यही कायरतापूर्ण दोष है और यदि भलीभाँति आलोचना करके कोई कार्य हो तो यही उसमें गुण माना जाता है
etad eva hi kārpaṇyaṁ samagram asamīkṣitam | yac cet samīkṣyaiva syād bhavet tasmiṁs tato guṇaḥ ||
Śaunaka said: This indeed is the very fault of cowardly weakness—when a matter is taken up in its entirety without prior examination. But if an undertaking proceeds only after careful scrutiny, then that very deliberation becomes its merit. In ethical life, rash action born of confusion is blameworthy, while reflective discernment is praised as a virtue.
