Protection of the Refuge-Seeker: Opening of the Kapota Narrative
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् । भारद्वाजस्य संवाद राज्ञ: शत्रुंजयस्य च,इस विषयमें भारद्वाज कणिक तथा राजा शत्रुंजयके संवादरूप एक प्रचीन इतिहासका उदाहरण दिया जाता है
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam | bhāradvājasya saṃvādaṃ rājñaḥ śatruñjayasya ca ||
Bhīṣma said: “Here too, they cite an ancient precedent: the old historical account in the form of a dialogue between Bhāradvāja and King Śatruñjaya.”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhīṣma frames his instruction by appealing to an authoritative precedent: ethical and political guidance is strengthened by citing an ancient exemplary narrative (itihāsa) and a sage–king dialogue as a model for right conduct and sound counsel.
Bhīṣma introduces a new illustrative episode: an old account presented as a conversation between the sage Bhāradvāja and King Śatruñjaya, which will be used to clarify the topic under discussion in this section of Śānti Parva.
