Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the stark openness of warfare: when conflict is joined, mutual harm follows from direct, unrestrained action. It implicitly frames martial valor as inseparable from grave ethical cost, reminding the listener that even ‘heroic’ combat is dreadful in its consequences.

Two warriors are engaged in a fierce mace-duel. Their fight is described as ghastly and fully exposed—each repeatedly striking the other with heavy mace-blows, wounding one another in close combat.
