vaiśampāyana uvāca | kauravāṇāṁ kulakaraṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ pāṇḍavam acyutam | ity uktaḥ śakuniḥ prāha jitam ity eva taṁ nṛpam ||

Vaiśampāyana said: When the king—Yudhiṣṭhira, the eldest of the Pāṇḍavas, a foremost scion of the Kuru line, one who does not swerve from propriety—had spoken thus, Śakuni replied to that ruler with only this: “Won—this too is won by me.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how adherence to outward propriety (playing by accepted rules) can be exploited when the setting is morally compromised; dharma requires discernment, not merely formal compliance, especially when deceit governs the contest.

In the dice-game at the royal assembly, after Yudhiṣṭhira stakes wealth, Śakuni responds tersely that he has won again—marking another loss for Yudhiṣṭhira and escalating the unraveling of the Pāṇḍavas’ fortunes.
