Vaiśampāyana said: “(He beheld) Śiva, radiant like the peak of Mount Kailāsa, seated upon the bull, continually gazing toward the southern quarter—the direction presided over by the Lord of the Fathers (Yama).”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames Śiva as a steady, luminous presence aligned with cosmic order: his constant gaze toward the southern quarter evokes the realm of Yama and the Pitṛs, reminding the listener of mortality, ancestral duty, and the dharmic seriousness that underlies royal action.
Vaiśampāyana describes a vision/appearance of Śiva: he is brilliant like Kailāsa’s summit, mounted on his bull, and continually looking toward the southern direction associated with Pitṛrāja (Yama). The description heightens the scene’s solemnity and divine oversight.
