अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः

विद्रुतान्‌ रथिनो दृष्टवा मन्ये शोचति पुत्रक: । दुर्मैषण और वृषसेन भी युद्धमें मारे गये, महारथी पाण्डवोंकी मार खाकर सेनामें भगदड़ मच गयी, सहायक नरेश युद्धसे विमुख हो पलायन करने लगे और रथियोंने पीठ दिखा दी। यह सब देखकर मेरा बेटा शोक कर रहा होगा; ऐसा मुझे मालूम हो रहा है

vidrutān rathino dṛṣṭvā manye śocati putrakaḥ |

Vaiśampāyana said: Seeing the chariot-warriors fleeing in disorder, I think my son is grieving. For Durmaiṣaṇa and Vṛṣasena too have been slain in battle; struck down by the mighty Pāṇḍavas, the army has fallen into panic and rout. The allied kings, turning away from the fight, have begun to run, and even the rathins have shown their backs. Witnessing all this, it seems to me that my son is overwhelmed with sorrow—so I judge.
