वे बाण नहीं, तक्षकपुत्र अश्वसेनके पक्षपाती पाँच विशाल सर्प थे। अर्जुनने सावधानीसे छोड़े गये दस भल्लोंद्वारा उनमेंसे प्रत्येकके तीन-तीन टुकड़े कर डाले। अर्जुनके बाणोंसे मारे जाकर वे पृथ्वीपर गिर पड़े ।। ततः प्रजज्वाल किरीटमाली क्रोधेन कक्ष प्रदहन्निवाग्नि: । तथा विनुन्नाड्भमवेक्ष्य कृष्णं सर्वेषुभि: कर्णभुजप्रसृष्टे:,कर्णके हाथोंसे छूटे हुए उन सभी बाणोंद्वारा श्रीकृष्णके श्रीअंगोंको घायल हुआ देख किरीटधारी अर्जुन सूखे काठ या घास-फूसके ढेरको जलानेवाली आगके समान क्रोधसे प्रज्वलित हो उठे
tataḥ prajajvāla kirīṭamālī krodhena kakṣaṁ pradahann ivāgniḥ | tathā vinunnāṅgam avekṣya kṛṣṇaṁ sarveṣubhiḥ karṇabhujaprasṛṣṭaiḥ ||
Sañjaya said: Those were no ordinary arrows, but five mighty serpents—Aśvasena, son of Takṣaka—fighting with partisan intent. Arjuna, acting with care, loosed ten bhalla shafts and cut each of them into three pieces; struck down by Arjuna’s arrows, they fell upon the earth. Then Arjuna, the diademed warrior, blazed with wrath like a fire that consumes a heap of dry wood or grass. Seeing Kṛṣṇa’s body wounded by all those arrows released from Karṇa’s mighty arms, Arjuna’s anger flared—an ethical surge of protective resolve toward his charioteer and guide amid the brutal demands of war.
