Sañjaya said: With a razor-edged shaft, a warrior’s left arm was severed along with its armour and fell to the earth. Thus the diademed Arjuna cut down the foremost champions of the enemy host. With exceedingly dreadful arrows that bring life to its end, he shattered Duryodhana’s army without remainder; and in the same way Karṇa, Vaikartana, in the midst of battle loosed volleys of arrows by the thousand.

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores how, once dharma has collapsed into total war, even the greatest heroes—Arjuna and Karṇa—advance the conflict through unmatched martial prowess. It highlights the ethical tragedy of escalation: skill and duty operate within a battlefield where restraint is scarce and the cost is widespread destruction.

Sañjaya reports a vivid moment of carnage: a warrior’s left arm is cut off with armor and falls to the ground; Arjuna then slays leading enemy champions and devastates Duryodhana’s forces with deadly arrows. In parallel, Karṇa also showers the battlefield with thousands of arrows, matching the intensity of the fight.
