Sañjaya said: When that dreadful, slaughter-bringing battle was raging, the mighty Duryodhana and Bhīmasena closed with one another and began to fight, each seeking to overpower the other amid the ruin of war.

The verse underscores the moral gravity of war: even when mighty heroes clash, the setting is a 'people-destroying' conflict, reminding the listener that strength and valor operate within a tragic ethical landscape where adharma-driven hostility yields mass suffering.
Sanjaya reports that, amid the terrifying ongoing battle, Duryodhana and Bhimasena meet directly and begin fighting each other, marking a focused duel within the wider carnage.
