Subhadrā-vilāpaḥ — Subhadrā’s Lament for Abhimanyu
Droṇa-parva 55
evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ devarṣiṃ nṛpatiḥ sṛñjayo 'bravīt | mameyaṃ bhagavan kanyā matto varam abhīpsati |
As the divine seer spoke thus, King Sṛñjaya replied: “Revered one, this is my daughter; she seeks to obtain a boon from me.”
The verse highlights the ethical weight of granting boons: a king (and father) must respond to requests with discernment, balancing affection and obligation with dharma, since a boon can set irreversible consequences in motion.
After the divine seer has spoken, King Sṛñjaya addresses him respectfully and introduces the situation: his daughter is present and is seeking a boon from her father, prompting the next turn of the story.
