Sañjaya said: The Somakas quickly struck from all sides with showers of arrows. There, Droṇa was taking the lives of the kṣatriyas, O lord of the people—an image of war’s grim momentum, where prowess and duty on the battlefield turn into relentless slaughter.

The verse underscores the harsh ethical tension of kṣatriya-dharma: even when framed as duty and skill, war rapidly becomes a cycle of retaliation and mass killing, revealing the moral cost behind martial glory.
Seeing Droṇa cutting down warriors, the Somakas counterattack immediately, surrounding him and wounding him with concentrated volleys of arrows, while Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Droṇa is taking the lives of many kṣatriyas.
