Sañjaya said: Bhīṣma, whose spirit was immeasurable, went forth together with Droṇa, Śalya, and Kṛpa and checked their advance. He halted the onrushing force as a mountain blocks the rush of waters.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights steadfastness and disciplined restraint in the midst of conflict: true strength is shown not only in striking but also in the capacity to check and contain overwhelming force, holding one’s position in accordance with one’s chosen duty.

As opposing warriors surge forward, Bhīṣma—accompanied by Droṇa, Śalya, and Kṛpa—moves to block their momentum and stop their advance, compared to a mountain damming a powerful current.
