तं॑ शल्यो नवभिर्भित्त्वा पुनर्विव्याध पठ्चभि: । सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन गाढं विव्याध मर्मणि,यह देख शल्यने भीमसेनको पहले नौ बाणोंसे विदीर्ण करके फिर पाँच बाणोंद्वारा घायल किया। साथ ही एक भल्लके द्वारा उनके सारथिके भी मर्मस्थानोंमें अधिक चोट पहुँचायी
taṁ śalyo navabhir bhittvā punar vivyādha pañcabhiḥ | sārathiṁ cāsya bhallena gāḍhaṁ vivyādha marmaṇi ||
Sañjaya said: Śalya, after piercing him with nine arrows, struck him again with five more. And with a sharp bhalla-arrow he grievously wounded his charioteer in a vital spot—an episode that underscores the ruthless intensity of battle, where even those who merely serve the warrior become targets.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how war compresses moral space: even non-combatant aides like charioteers can be harmed, illustrating the harsh reality of kṣatriya warfare and the ethical erosion that prolonged conflict can bring.
Sañjaya reports that Śalya pierces Bhīmasena with nine arrows, then strikes him again with five more, and additionally wounds Bhīma’s charioteer with a bhalla-arrow in a vital spot.
