Steady, practical charity—specifically supporting the daily needs of virtuous Brahmins (such as providing firewood for cooking and warmth)—is praised as a dharmic act that brings consistent success in one’s aims and confers social and moral ascendancy, symbolized by ‘shining’ and being ‘above enemies.’
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma instructs the king on dharma and the fruits of various gifts. Here he states the beneficial results that accrue to a donor: the person’s endeavors succeed, and he gains a superior, radiant standing over adversaries.
