Vāyu said: “In former times, the Grandsire (Brahmā) proclaimed to the gods the ten thousand names of Śarva (Śiva). Likewise, the scriptures also record hundreds of his names.” The statement underscores that the divine is approached through many epithets, and that reverent remembrance of the name (nāma) is a tradition-backed path of devotion.

Educational Q&A

That the remembrance and recitation of the deity’s many names is an authoritative, scripture-supported devotional practice, reflecting the many aspects through which the divine may be understood and worshipped.

Vāyu reports a traditional account: Brahmā once taught the gods an immense set of Śiva’s names, and he notes that scriptures preserve numerous such name-lists as well.
