Adhyāya 152 — Bhīṣma’s Authorization for Yudhiṣṭhira’s Return to the Capital (नगरप्रवेशानुज्ञा)
जो सब प्रकारसे समर्थ होकर भी दूसरोंसे पूछता तथा उन्हें सम्मान देता है और जिसके मनमें कभी दुष्टता नहीं आती, वह मनुष्य निस्संदेह पण्डित कहलाता है ।। ज्ञानविज्ञानसम्पन्नानूहापोहविशारदान् । प्रवक्तून् पृच्छते योडन्यान् स वै नापदमृच्छति,जो मनुष्य ज्ञान-विज्ञानसे सम्पन्न और ऊहापोहमें कुशल दूसरे-दूसरे वक्ताओंसे अपना संदेह पूछता है, वह आपत्तिमें नहीं पड़ता है। विशेष बुद्धिमान् पुरुष सभामें और तरहकी बात करता है और अहंकारी मनुष्य और ही तरहकी दुर्बलतायुक्त बातें करता है
jñāna-vijñāna-sampannān ūhāpohaviśāradān | pravaktūn pṛcchate yo 'nyān sa vai nāpadam ṛcchati ||
Maheshvara said: One who, though fully capable, still asks others, honors them, and never allows malice to arise in his mind is truly called a learned person. The man who is endowed with knowledge and realized understanding, skilled in weighing alternatives, and who questions various teachers to clear his doubts, does not fall into calamity. In an assembly, the truly intelligent speak with discernment, whereas the arrogant speak differently—revealing weakness and lack of steadiness.
