Inquiry into the Discipline of Fasting

Bhishma said: A disciple cannot properly remain under the discipline of a teacher whose judgment is not mature. For, O Bharata, whatever farsightedness belongs to the teacher, that very quality is reflected in the disciple as well—when the elder is truly long-sighted, the younger too becomes long-sighted.

Obedience and disciplined following become untenable when the guide (guru/elder) lacks mature discernment; true farsightedness in leadership naturally shapes and elevates the follower’s outlook.
In the Anuśāsana discourse, Bhishma continues instructing Yudhiṣṭhira on right conduct and social ethics, emphasizing how the quality of an elder’s judgment determines the stability and moral formation of those who follow.
