Bhrigu Lineage Preface and the Pulomā–Agni Dialogue
अथेमां वेददृष्टेन कर्मणा विधिपूर्वकम् । भायमिषिर्भगु: प्राप मां पुरस्कृत्य दानव,दानव! तदनन्तर महर्षि भृगुने मुझे साक्षी बनाकर वेदोक्त क्रियाद्वारा विधिपूर्वक इसका पाणिग्रहण किया था
athe māṁ vedadṛṣṭena karmaṇā vidhipūrvakam | bhāyam ṛṣir bhaguḥ prāpa māṁ puraskṛtya dānava dānava | tadanantaraṁ maharṣi-bhṛguṇe māṁ sākṣīṁ kṛtvā vedokta-kriyādvārā vidhipūrvakam asyāḥ pāṇigrahaṇaṁ kṛtam |
Then, in strict accordance with the rite as taught in the Veda and performed by proper rule, the sage Bhagu approached me, placing me foremost as witness. After that, the great seer Bhṛgu, making me the attesting witness, duly carried out her marriage by the Vedic procedure.
शौनक उवाच
That dharmic legitimacy in marriage depends on Veda-prescribed rites performed ‘vidhipūrvakam’ (according to rule) and validated through accountable witnessing, rather than mere personal will or power.
A sage (Bhagu) approaches and places the speaker as a foremost witness; thereafter the great seer Bhṛgu performs the woman’s pāṇigrahaṇa (formal marriage) through Vedic ritual procedure, emphasizing due process.
