Āstīka’s Commission and Approach to Janamejaya’s Sarpa-satra
The king did not realize that the sage was observing a vow of silence. Overcome by anger, your father insulted that virtuous ascetic.
Anger coupled with lack of discernment leads to adharma: one must restrain krodha and show due respect to ascetics, especially when their conduct (like silence) may be misunderstood.
Janamejaya recounts that the king failed to realize the sage was under a vow of silence; taking the silence wrongly and becoming angry, the king (Janamejaya’s father) insulted the muni, setting the stage for ensuing consequences.
