Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the inevitability and power of Kāla (Time/Death), which can erode even established lineages, while also highlighting that disciplined tapas may preserve or restore what remains. It frames human continuity and duty as fragile before Time, urging timely, dharmic action rather than complacency.

Takṣaka explains an allegorical scene to a brāhmaṇa: beings are hanging in a pit by a support that represents the last surviving link of a family line, engaged in austerity. The creature seen as a mouse is revealed to be Kāla itself, the force that has already consumed other ‘threads’ of the lineage.
