Cause of Kalmāṣapāda’s Niyoga under a Curse
ततः सर्वानिवद्याज़ीं तपतीं तपन: स्वयम् । ददौ संवरणस्यार्थ वसिष्ठाय महात्मने,तदनन्तर साक्षात् भगवान् सूर्यने अनिन्द्यसुन्दरी तपतीको राजा संवरणकी पत्नी होनेके लिये महात्मा वसिष्ठको अर्पित कर दिया
tataḥ sarvānivadyāṃ ca tapantīṃ tapanaḥ svayam | dadau saṃvaraṇasyārthe vasiṣṭhāya mahātmane ||
Then Tapana (the Sun-god) himself, presenting the wholly blameless and radiant Tapatī, entrusted her to the great-souled Vasiṣṭha so that she might become the wife of King Saṃvaraṇa.
वसिष्ठ उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic mediation in marriage: a revered sage serves as a trustworthy guardian and facilitator, ensuring that a union is formed through proper authority, consent, and social-religious propriety rather than mere impulse.
The Sun-god (Tapana) personally entrusts his daughter Tapati—described as blameless—to the sage Vasiṣṭha, with the explicit purpose that she be given in marriage to King Saṃvaraṇa.
