Uddhava’s Departure to Badarikāśrama and Vidura’s Turn Toward Maitreya
jñānaṁ paraṁ svātma-rahaḥ-prakāśaṁ provāca kasmai bhagavān samagram api kṣamaṁ no grahaṇāya bhartar vadāñjasā yad vṛjinaṁ tarema
My Lord, if You deem us fit to receive it, please reveal to us that supreme transcendental knowledge which illumines Your own Self, which You formerly spoke to Brahmā, so that we may easily cross beyond misfortune.
A pure devotee like Uddhava has no material afflictions because he engages constantly in the transcendental loving service of the Lord. A devotee feels afflicted without the association of the Lord. Constant remembrance of the Lord’s activities keeps the devotee alive, and therefore Uddhava requested that the Lord please enlighten him with the knowledge of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, as previously instructed to Brahmājī.
This verse describes the highest knowledge as self-luminous and capable of revealing the deepest secret of the Self, and it is meant to help one cross beyond suffering and misfortune.
Vidura wants the authentic lineage and context of the teaching so the listeners can approach it properly, become qualified to receive it, and follow a direct, reliable path to liberation.
Seek genuine spiritual instruction from an authentic source, cultivate qualification through humility and sincerity, and apply the teachings consistently to rise above anxiety, wrongdoing, and inner darkness.
