The Lord Appears to the Devas and Instructs the Truce; Mandara Is Brought for Churning
तांस्तथा भग्नमनसो भग्नबाहूरुकन्धरान् । विज्ञाय भगवांस्तत्र बभूव गरुडध्वज: ॥ ३६ ॥
tāṁs tathā bhagna-manaso bhagna-bāhūru-kandharān vijñāya bhagavāṁs tatra babhūva garuḍa-dhvajaḥ
Their hearts were broken, and their arms, thighs, and shoulders were shattered. Knowing all, the Supreme Bhagavān—He whose banner is Garuḍa—appeared there.
This verse shows that when the devas were physically and mentally crushed, the Supreme Lord personally manifested (as Garuḍa-dhvaja Viṣṇu), indicating His immediate protection when His dependents are overwhelmed.
He appeared after perceiving the devas’ broken condition, signaling divine intervention to restore courage, order, and the next steps in the unfolding Samudra Manthana narrative.
When strength and confidence collapse, this verse encourages taking shelter of Bhagavān through prayer and steady devotion, trusting that sincere dependence invites guidance and protection.
