Mantra 1

वयमु त्वामपूर्व्य स्थूरं न कच्चिद् भरन्तोऽवस्यवः । वाजे चित्रं हवामहे

We, bringing our offerings, craving succor, invoke thee—unrivalled, stout—whom none anywhere surpasseth; we call the wondrous one for the prize of strength.

Toward thee, in the rite, for help we have advanced—toward the young, the fierce, who is bold. Thee verily, for thou art protector, we choose as comrade, O Indra, the winner who brings us gain.

Mantra 3

यो न इदमिदं पुरा प्र वस्य आनिनाय तमु व स्तुषे । सखाय इन्द्रमूतये

He who of old hath brought us, each and each, the better boon—him verily do I extol for you, O comrades: Indra, for our succour.

Mantra 4

हर्यश्वं सत्पतिं चर्षणीसहं स हि ष्मा यो अमन्दत । आ तु नः स वयति गव्यमश्व्यं स्तोतृभ्यो मघवा शतम्

Tawny-steeded, lord of the good, o’erpowering men—he, forsooth, who is exhilarated: may he now dispense to us, to the praisers, cattle-wealth and horse-wealth, the bounteous Maghavan, a hundredfold.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is mainly a prosperity-and-victory hymn: it calls Indra to grant vāja (success/prize/strength), protect the group, and bestow cattle and horses in abundance.

To build ritual certainty: if Indra repeatedly gave boons in the past, the same Indra can be relied upon now when praised and invoked for succour (ūti).

No special herbs or amulets are required. A simple offering (like ghee or a food token) is optional; the hymn itself treats sincere praise and invocation as the key ‘offering’.
