Als der weise Kumbhakarṇa eilends hervorbrach, erschienen ringsum schreckliche Vorzeichen.
The clouds appeared in the colour of donkey and there was thunder and lightning. The oceans, forests and earth seemed as though shaken.
The appearance of ominous signs functions as a moral signal in epic narrative: nature reflects ethical disorder. The dharmic reading is that adharma-bound action invites cosmic resistance and inner ruin, even for the “wise.”
Kumbhakarṇa’s advance is accompanied by alarming portents in the environment.
Swiftness and resolve; the verse also highlights the limitation of mere intelligence (dhī) when it is not aligned with dharma.
