Janaka Instructs Śuka: Āśrama-Sequence, Guru-Dependence, and Marks of Liberation
Janaka
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: none
It frames mokṣa-dharma through foundational discipline: after the upanayana saṁskāra, a brāhmaṇa’s primary orientation is toward Veda-study, which purifies conduct and prepares the mind for higher knowledge.
While not explicitly naming bhakti, it establishes Vedic study (veda-parāyaṇa) as the grounding for dharma and right understanding, which in the Purāṇic framework supports mature devotion by aligning life with sacred injunctions.
The verse points to the education-track that follows upanayana—systematic Veda recitation and study—implying the need for supporting Vedāṅgas such as Śikṣā (phonetics) and Vyākaraṇa (grammar) to preserve correct chanting and meaning.
