Sahadeva’s Audience with Virāṭa as Cattle-Enumerator
Tantipāla
na cāpy ahaṃ cālayituṃ śakyā kenacid raṇe | duḥkhaśīlā hi gandharvāsti ca me balinaḥ priyāḥ ||
The verse highlights the ethical tension between confidence and overconfidence: strength and fierce allies can inspire resolve, yet such assertions also foreshadow the consequences of pride when one underestimates formidable opponents.
In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a speaker asserts that no one can dislodge him in battle, emphasizing the fearsome nature of the Gandharvas and the strength of his own dear companions, setting the tone for an impending confrontation.
