Draupadī’s Lament and Theodicy: Dharma, Dice, and Īśvara’s Governance (Āraṇyaka-parva 31)
एतावदेव पर्याप्तमुपमानं शुचिस्मिते । कर्मणां फलमाप्रोति धीरोडल्पेनापि तुष्यति,पवित्र मुसकानवाली द्रौपदी! इतना ही दृष्टान्त देना पर्याप्त है। धीर पुरुष कर्मोका फल पाता है और थोड़े-से फलसे भी संतुष्ट हो जाता है
etāvad eva paryāptam upamānaṃ śucismite | karmaṇāṃ phalam āpnoti dhīro 'lpene 'pi tuṣyati ||
Yudhiṣṭhira sprach: „O Draupadī mit reinem, sanftem Lächeln, dieses Beispiel genügt. Der standhafte Mensch erlangt die Frucht seiner Taten und ist selbst mit geringem Gewinn zufrieden.“
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse teaches karmaphala and inner steadiness: one should act rightly and accept the resulting fruit without greed; a truly composed person remains content even when the outcome is small.
Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Draupadī and concludes a point by saying that the example given is enough; he emphasizes the virtue of the dhīra—one who accepts the fruits of action with contentment.
