Kāśī princesses taken; encounter with Śālva; Ambā’s declaration

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores dharma in family and kingship: marriage establishes legitimate lineage, and the birth of an heir carries ethical duties—especially the obligation to acknowledge and protect one’s spouse and child, ensuring social and dynastic continuity.

Vaiśampāyana states that King Duṣyanta married Śakuntalā, identified here as Viśvāmitra’s daughter, and that their son Bharata was born from this union.
