Ādi-parva Adhyāya 33: Vāsuki’s Council on Averting the Sarpa-satra
तमुवाचाव्ययो देवो वरदो5स्मीति खेचरम् । स वत्रे तव तिछेयमुपरीत्यन्तरिक्षग:,अतः उन अविनाशी भगवान् विष्णुने आकाशचारी गरुडसे कहा--मैं तुम्हें वर देना चाहता हूँ।' अन्तरिक्षमें विचरनेवाले गरुडने यह वर माँगा--'प्रभो! मैं आपके ऊपर (थ्वजमें) स्थित होऊँ"
tam uvāca avyayo devo varado 'smīti khecaram | sa vavre tava tiṣṭheyam uparītya antarīkṣagaḥ ||
Śaunaka sprach: Der unvergängliche göttliche Herr wandte sich an den himmelswandernden Garuḍa und sprach: „Ich bin ein Spender von Gaben.“ Garuḍa, der durch den Luftraum zieht, wählte diese Gabe: „Herr, lass mich über dir bleiben — als dein Wahrzeichen aufgerichtet.“
