Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 50 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Appraisal of Bhīmasena (भीमसेनभयवर्णनम्)
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | mahāvego mahotsāho mahābāhur mahābalaḥ | mandānāṁ mama putrāṇāṁ yuddhenāntaṁ kariṣyati ||
The verse highlights how attachment and moral blindness distort judgment: Dhṛtarāṣṭra recognizes the opponent’s superior valor yet frames the crisis as the inevitable ruin of “my sons,” revealing fear and possessiveness rather than a dharmic willingness to restrain wrongdoing and avert war.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war deliberations, Dhṛtarāṣṭra speaks anxiously about a formidable warrior (implied to be on the Pāṇḍava side) and predicts that this hero will, through battle, bring about the death of his own sons, the Kauravas.
