Mārkaṇḍeya-varṇanam
The Description of Mārkaṇḍeya
nārada uvāca | brahmankathaṃ sa bhagavānmṛkaṇḍoḥ putratāṃ gataḥ | kiṃ cakāra ca tad brūhi harirbhārgavavaṃśajaḥ || 1 ||
Narada
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It frames the avatāra narrative as a teaching device: Nārada asks how the Supreme Lord can appear within a human lineage, pointing to the Purāṇic principle that divine descent happens for dharma and instruction.
By focusing attention on Hari’s birth and deeds, the verse sets up śravaṇa (devotional hearing) about Viṣṇu—one of the core limbs of bhakti emphasized across Purāṇic discourse.
No specific Vedāṅga is taught directly in this verse; however, it uses Purāṇic-anukrama style markers—speaker attribution and lineage references—which support traditional transmission, genealogy, and contextual interpretation.
