FAQs

It signals a śuddhi/prāyaścitta context and emphasizes that purification and release are accessible through righteous guidance/association, while also recording manuscript-recension variants that affect ritual phrasing (e.g., ‘tree-roots’ vs. ‘tree-roots and the like’, ‘purified by this’, ‘for livelihood’).

Alongside dharma and purification doctrine, it preserves philological information (multiple recension readings), showing the text’s encyclopedic function: it transmits ritual norms while also functioning as a compendium with variant traditions and interpretive cues.

It underscores that bondage arising from ignorance can be undone: even those marked by socially/ritually cited limitations may attain release from sin/defilement through śuddhi and alignment with the virtuous (sat-saṅga), highlighting inclusivity of purification and the primacy of right conduct.
