nūnaṃ na caiṣāṃ jananī tvaṃ saṃjñā kvāpi sā gatā | vikaleṣvapyapatyeṣu na mātā śāpadā bhavet
Sūrya (Āditya) addressing Chāyā
Tirtha: Prabhāsa-kṣetra
Type: kshetra
Listener: Chāyā
Scene: Sūrya’s discerning rebuke: he infers Chāyā is not the true mother; Saṃjñā has gone elsewhere; he states the ethical maxim that a mother should not curse even flawed children.
A mother’s dharma is compassion and protection; even when children falter, harsh cursing is portrayed as adharma.
Prabhāsakṣetra is the overarching sacred geography of the section, though this verse is primarily ethical narrative.
