Adhyaya 80 — Vaivasvata Manvantara: Enumeration of Manus and the Eighth Manu Sāvarṇi
pātāla āste yo ’dyāpi daityaḥ samayabandhanaḥ / virajāś cārvavīraś ca nirmohaḥ satyavāk kṛtiḥ / viṣṇvādyāś caiva tanayāḥ sāvarṇasya manornṛpāḥ
Even mighty beings are ‘bound by samaya’—a lawful condition or covenant. Power is subordinated to dharma and divine ordinance; restraint and accountability are cosmic principles.
Manvantara and Vaṃśa: it continues manvantara particulars (Indra’s status) and genealogical listing (Manu’s sons).
Pātāla here functions as a liminal ‘holding realm’: forces not presently manifest in the upper worlds are conserved under constraint, to re-emerge when the cycle requires their role.
